10-3-2024 TEN YEARS OF PRESERVATION AND COMMUNITY STEWARDSHIP
Next year will mark the 10th anniversary of the protection and guardianship of one of Kona's treasured Hawaiian cultural sites, the Keaukukui`ula Heiau.
In 2015, a handful of kahu mālama (caretakers) took on the responsibility to malama (care for) this ancient preserve. Much have been done in those 10 years, and the preserve's stewardship continues.
Over the years, others joined in the effort to ensure the site's survival by clearing thick brush of invasive plants, trees, shrubs, and debris--mostly by hand in keeping with Hawaiian practices. Items that desecrated the sanctity of the heiau during the development of Pualani Estates were removed or mitigated largely by hand and, wherever possible; some areas were imposible to recover.
Within a decade, more has been revealed about the heiau, thanks to the coalition of many hands working together that included volunteers, researchers, practitioners, families, historians, and others. Their efforts held true to the site's maxim: Ahuwale ka nane huna (What was hidden is revealed).
Mahalo a nui loa (Thank you very much) to all who continue to help and mālama ka`aina (care for the land) to ensure this historic cultural treasure will be here for generations to come.
